Jon Spencer was born in London in 1978, growing up in the Kings Cross / Bloomsbury area, before moving to Nottingham in 1994.
His London connections were renewed with a year working as an engineering technician on the London Underground before going to Sheffield University to study Architecture. He duly spent some time working as an architectural assistant, before taking an MA at the London College of Printing in 2003 (now London College of Communication). Although formally a graphic design programme, the MA at LCP rightly prides itself in bringing together a group of people from a range of art and design backgrounds and is chiefly interested in the process of design and visual research. The majority of Jon’s work here was based on photography of the urban environment, with design providing a vessel for experimentation.
Since completing the MA Jon’s work has continued in this vein. His commercial practice as a freelance photographer & designer is mainly involved with architecture & related fields, while his personal work as a photographer revels in the city, whether its textures, ethereal memory or history.
